How to backup your Windows Vista powered netbook
Some of the most important features available on our computing devices such as desktops, notebooks or netbooks are seldom used. One of them is the ‘Backup and restore’ option, which is extremely useful. I was always worried about data loss, especially on my netbook while travelling. This great feature in Windows Vista comes with an inbuilt ‘backup and restore’ option to take adequate precaution on the move. Check out how this works.
Follow the steps given below to back up your files:
- Click Start > Settings - > Control Panel
- Click ‘Backup and Restore Center’

- Under ‘Back up files or your entire computer’, click ‘Back up files’.

- On the next page, specify where you want to save your backup. Vista allows you to save your back files on local hard drives, CD/DVD or on a network location. For your desktop, you can select the first radio button i.e., ‘On a hard disk, CD, or DVD’, and choose the appropriate disk from the drop-down box. On your netbook, you can select the second option, click the ‘Browse...’ button and choose the appropriate location on your network. Once you've chosen your backup storage location, click ‘Next’ to continue.

- Windows Vista automatically detects the installed hard drives and lists all the partitions. In this step, you need to select the drives that you want to include in the backup. By default, Vista includes the root drive of your computer and you can’t uncheck this drive. Once you are done with drive selection, click ‘Next’ to continue.

- Select the file types you want to back up and click ‘Next’.

- Click the drop-down boxes to select how often you want the backup to run (daily, weekly, or monthly), on which day of the week, and on what time of day. Click ‘Save settings and start backup’ to begin the backup process.

- Click Start > Settings - > Control Panel
- Click Backup and Restore Center
- Under ‘Back up files or your entire computer’, click ‘Back up Computer’.
- Select a location to save the backup. Click ‘Next’ to continue.

- Select the partitions you want to back up. See step 6 above for detailed instructions.
- Confirm your backup settings and click ‘Start backup’ to begin the backup process.
