Back up into the cloud
Written by Subhankar
Much to my dismay, I realized that all the important data on my notebook had vanished when it crashed unmercifully last month. I was left with no way to retrieve my data. I know there are many conventional ways to protect data – local back-ups, CDs/DVDs, external hard drives… But I need to confess that I am too lazy for all that. While twittering, I learned about Mozy, which gives 2GB free online back-up on my HP 2133 as I can’t bear the embarrassment and anguish of facing the same situation.
There is always an element of risk even if you take a back-up through conventional devices. A natural disaster, theft, or ransacking of your office could damage your back-up devices. A reliable online back-up solution could put your fears at rest. Mozy has over 750,000 users who can afford to sleep peacefully sans worries about photos, music, and mails on their machines.
Mozy
With more than 750,000 users, Mozy offers secure and automatic service to back up all the important data at a remote location over the Internet. For home users, the service provides a free 2GB back up space. For business users, Mozy Pro offers a lot more.
How secure is it?
Security is a big issue while going for any web-based service, especially those dealing with storage. I don’t worry much about data security even though Mozy is an online solution. You must know the reason. For transmission, it uses 128-bit SSL encryption for the safety and security of your data. It implies that the moment your computer dispatches the data, you can rest assured that no one has access to it. For storage at Mozy’s servers, it uses 448-bit Blowfish encryption. So, even in the wildest possibility of someone hacking the data, it will still remain unreadable.
So, security seems to be one of Mozy’s top priorities.
Flexibility
There are some features that really attracted me towards Mozy. As I am very cautious about my data, most of my files on my mini-notebook are locked. I was wondering if Mozy supported locked files. It actually does!
Apart from the highly-secured encryption, which I have just discussed, another feature I must mention is that it doesn’t affect your work at all when it performs the back-up tasks automatically in the background. Wow!
There are other features such as supporting version control, automatic back-up scheduling or supporting outlook email files.
The backup process of Mozy is much faster as it backs up only those files added during subsequent backups.
Let’s sign up and back-up!
Go to Mozy and click the free account offer.

Enter your correct email-id and information.

Next, open your mailbox where you’ll find a mail from Mozy containing the link to activate your account and download the software.

Now, click ‘Download for Win’ or ‘Download for Mac’ as per your mini-notebook’s OS. I have downloaded it for Windows.

Save, open and run the installation file.

Follow the instructions and accept the agreements.
Once you’re done with the installation process, login with the email id and password entered while creating the account.

Select the one of the two encryption options on the next dialog-box. I have chosen Blowfish encryption.

Now, you can select the types of files or selected folders you want to back up.

Update the quota in your Mozy Account. It will communicate with MozyHome servers to update any changes made to your account.

Mozy will now start backing up your mini-notebook.

This process may take some time. At any time during the process, if you want to cancel the back-up, just click the ‘Cancel back-up’ button.
